How to Use the Traceroute and Ping Commands to Troubleshoot Network Connectivity Issues

How to Perform Ping Test and Traceroute Test from Your Computer or Laptop?

Ensuring your domain points to the correct IP address is crucial for smooth website operation. While various online tools provide DNS status information, relying solely on them might not reflect your local system’s perspective. To verify this locally, we’ll perform ping and traceroute tests. These tests record the route between your system and the destination server, offering insights into potential network issues. Follow along to conduct these tests on your Windows PC/Laptop.

Ping Test

  • Press the Windows key on your keyboard or click on the Start button in the bottom-left corner of your screen.
  • Type cmd in the search bar and press Enter to open the Command Prompt.

Traceroute Test:

  • Open the Command Prompt as mentioned above.
  • In the Command Prompt window, type tracert [domain or IP address] and press Enter.
  • Wait for the traceroute test to complete. You will see a list of all the hops (routers) between your local system and the destination, along with the response time for each hop.
